The territory of the Ho-Chunk Nation once extended from Green Bay beyond Lake Winnebago to the Wisconsin River and Rock River in Illinois. The Ho-Chunk, meaning “people of the big voice,” underwent great hardship in the 1820s when they were forced to leave their land and head to northwestern Iowa and south-central Minnesota. The Ho-Chunk people were again moved in 1863 to a desolate reservation in South Dakota. Though the Ho-Chunk does not currently have a reservation in Wisconsin, they’ve purchased back their tribal lands in the region.
Today, the 4,900 members of the Ho-Chunk Sovereign Nation hold title to 2,000 acres of land. They continue in their dedication to preserve the Ho-Chunk culture, and the Ho-Chunk Casino in Baraboo, WI, is a big part of that commitment.
Ho-Chunk gambling proceeds allow for great strides in education and business development for the community. In the Ho-Chunk spirit, the group has also worked with surrounding communities to create a climate of prospering and goodwill. As they say, “Good friends. Good fortune.”
